I used to take many things for granted. When I was kid, I used to think going to the doctor and dentist was a normal routine for everyone. In fact, I actually dreaded going to those places.
Well, in 2008, I took myself off of all health benefits in order to save every dollar I could in order to keep GoNextWorld moving forward. (It was sort of like Indiana Jones when he takes that leap of faith in "The Last Crusade". ) I had no idea what was in front of me and what I would actually have to give up for the next few years.
It meant no more hockey, no more physical risks, no more safety net. It was a scary time. Little did I know how scary it could be. Last year as I was turning the lights on at the gym, I fell off a treadmill and popped something in my ankle. I remember hearing something snap. No matter what, I could go to a doctor. To be honest, it never even cross my mind. GoNextWorld had to survive and even if the ankle was broken, I'd be able to crawl to my office. So, the 6 week limp was motivation to get GoNextWorld where it had to be.
Nobody in their right mind would advise someone to take themselves off of health insurance, but it is truly amazing what some people will do in order to keep their dream alive.
I prayed everyday to stay healthy until I was able to afford health insurance again and not put GoNextWorld in financial danger in the process. Well, I am fortunate enough to say that today is the day that I can opt back into health insurance. I'm gonna need it to complete Project Hail Mary.
I was always confused when I'd hear people say they don't believe there is something/someone watching out for us. These are the people that will never take that leap of faith. More importantly, they will never experience the amazing feeling when they realize something is there to stop them from falling.
I will never take going to the dentist for granted ever again. I can't wait to go back...
